"With the inception of the 2015 edition of CSA 22.3 that mandated a geometric nonlinear analysis method, our large-scale local distribution company was looking to replace its disparate spreadsheet analysis methods and was searching for a scalable code compliant solution that would strike the delicate balance between enhanced functionality and user friendly operability. "We have been using SPIDAcalc for several years now with much success. " Our company has been using Spida since 2012 and we have been through many iterations of the software. As with any software, there are problems that you will discover after you implement the use of it. Having said that here is what we have experienced:
SPIDA Software is a very flexible program and based on your particular client file and the wire tensions you choose to use in the background, it will give you a theoretically accurate model of the structure that you are trying to analyze. There are functions that can be turned on or off that will change the outputs but generally speaking the output will be on the conservative side. This has the effect of producing a slightly higher safety factor or Percent usage of the structure. Having said that, it is once again customizable to each utilities particular set of parameters. We have run many scenarios through the program, at this point approaching 1 million structures and over all we are satisfied with the results. Spida has been a stable platform for our company and given the amount of data that is processed it has run quite smoothly form an end user standpoint.
Our company evaluated other software programs and found Spida to be our best choice based on a relatively long list of business requirements. Spida integrated well with our primary record and data keeping program.
I am speaking as primarily an end user but I have also been an integral part of our Spida validation and ongoing evaluation team. The folks at Spida have been a great bunch of people to work with and at least for our company, have always been receptive to suggestions to help improve or correct issues with the program. From my personal standpoint, I am quite pleased with the software and I am looking forward to the future improvements that are on the horizon. With the Calc 7 functionality of connectivity and more of a “System” model, Spida is becoming a better tool to run a more “real world” analysis. From a personal standpoint, Spida is a very user friendly software. It is very intuitive for anyone with a background in the utility sector and is quite easily learned with a minimum of training on the software application. Collection of accurate field data is the more difficult problem to solve and if not done correctly will lead to poor inputs to the program. This equals the old saying “Garbage in, Garbage out."
Spida has improved the user experience over the years and has created an interface that is customizable to each end user's preferences. From a functionality standpoint, the interface works quite well."
